A WhatsApp group is only as safe as its settings and its habits. Admins of family, school, church, community and work groups can stop most scams with a few changes and one clear rule about money.

Settings to change

Open the group, tap its name, then Group permissions or Group settings.

  • Edit group settings: Only admins. Stops anyone changing the name, photo or description to something misleading.
  • Send messages: Only admins for announcement-style groups.
  • Add other members: Only admins.
  • Approve new members: On. Admins check requests from invite links before people join.
  • Invite link: share it privately, and reset it if it has been posted publicly.

Rules to pin

  • "We never collect money through this group. Payments go through [official route]." See collecting group money safely.
  • "Do not click links or share codes asked for by members. Report suspicious posts to an admin."
  • "If someone messages you privately after joining this group, check with an admin."

When a scammer gets in

  1. Remove them and report their number.
  2. Post a short warning describing what they sent.
  3. Reset the invite link.
  4. If it was a member's hacked account, remove it until the member recovers. See account recovery.

Have at least two trusted admins, both with two-step verification on, so one hacked account cannot take over the group.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most useful setting?

Approve new members, so nobody joins through a shared link without an admin checking them first.

Should I make the group admin-only for messages?

For announcement groups, such as a school class or club notices, yes. For discussion groups, keep member messages on but limit who can edit group info.

What if an admin's account is hacked?

Other admins should remove it as admin straight away, warn the group, and reset the invite link.
