Scams in Family, School and Community Groups
Fake collections, impersonated leaders and 'too good to miss' links spread fast in trusted WhatsApp groups. The common patterns and how members and admins can stop them.

Family chats, school parents, places of worship, sports clubs, alumni and neighbourhood groups all run on trust. A message from "the treasurer" or a long-standing member rarely gets questioned. Scammers take advantage of that.
Common patterns
- Impersonated leaders: a new number using the pastor's, imam's, coach's or chairperson's name asks for a contribution. See community leader impersonation.
- Hacked member accounts posting investment tips or urgent loans. See how stolen accounts are used.
- Fake collections for funerals, medical bills or disasters. See charity appeals on WhatsApp.
- Vote links that steal accounts. See vote scams.
- Private follow-ups: strangers who join, then message members one by one.
What members can do
- Check any payment request with the organiser by phone or in person.
- Do not click links in forwarded offers without checking them. See checking a WhatsApp link.
- Tell an admin if a member's messages seem out of character.
What admins can do
- Turn on member approval and limit who can edit group info. See group admin safety.
- Agree one official way to collect money. See collecting group money safely.
- Post quick warnings when a scam is spotted.

Frequently asked questions
Why are community groups targeted?
Members trust each other and the group leaders, messages spread quickly, and payments for shared causes are normal.
A group leader posted a payment request. How do I check?
Call them on a number you already had, or ask another organiser in person, before paying.
Someone shared a link to a free offer. Should I click?
Only after checking it. Offers shared in trusted groups often come from hacked accounts or well-meaning members who were fooled.
