Payment Requests in WhatsApp Chats: How to Verify
Friends, family, sellers, landlords and bosses all ask for money on WhatsApp, and so do scammers pretending to be them. A short checklist to run before any payment.

On WhatsApp, a request for money looks the same whether it comes from your sister, your landlord, your boss or a scammer using their name. The only way to be sure is to check outside the chat. This checklist takes a couple of minutes and prevents most WhatsApp payment scams.
The checklist
- Who is asking? Is it a number you have used before, or a new one?
- Call them. Use a normal call to a number you already had. See a friend asking for money.
- Whose account? Is the money going to the person or business you know, or to someone else's account?
- Why now? Is there a deadline, an emergency, or a reason you must not tell anyone?
- Changed details? New bank details by message are a classic sign of fraud. See changed bank details.
- Unusual method? Gift cards, crypto or airtime are almost never legitimate. See why scammers want these.
If any answer feels wrong, stop. A real friend, relative or business will understand a short delay while you check.
Who scammers pretend to be
- Family with a new number. See the new number scam.
- Your boss or a colleague. See payment requests from the boss.
- A landlord, school or group treasurer. See group money safety.
- A seller or buyer. See buying and selling safely.

Frequently asked questions
What is the single best check?
A voice call to a number you already had for that person or business, not the number in the chat.
What if they say they cannot talk?
Wait until they can. A genuine request can survive a short delay; scams depend on urgency.
Is a voice note enough?
Not on its own. Voices can be cloned with AI. A live call where you ask something only they would know is stronger.
