When you set up WhatsApp on a phone, it sends a six-digit code by text or call to prove the number is yours. This code is the key to your account. The verification code scam is simply a way to get you to hand it over.

How it happens

  1. A scammer starts registering WhatsApp with your number on their phone.
  2. WhatsApp sends the code to you.
  3. The scammer messages you, often from a friend's already stolen account, with a reason to send it on.
  4. You forward the code. They enter it, and your WhatsApp now runs on their phone.
  5. They message your contacts asking for money, or for their codes, and the chain continues.

Hey, sorry! I was trying to log in on my new phone and accidentally put your number. They sent you a 6 digit code, can you forward it to me please? It's urgent ๐Ÿ™
Red flags: any request for a code, an unlikely "mistake", and urgency. The friend's account is likely already stolen.

Common cover stories

  • "I sent it to you by mistake."
  • "Vote for my niece in a competition, just send the code you get." See vote scams.
  • "This is WhatsApp support, confirm the code to keep your account." See fake WhatsApp support.
  • "You won a prize, send the code to claim it."

The one rule: never share a WhatsApp code or PIN with anyone, for any reason. No genuine person or company needs it.

The request came from a friend. Is it safe?

No. Their account has probably already been taken over, and the scammer is using it to reach you.

I already shared the code. What now?
