Scam Calls on WhatsApp From International Numbers
Missed WhatsApp calls and messages from unfamiliar country codes are common. Why scammers use them, what they want, and how to silence and report them.

A WhatsApp call from a country code you do not recognise, often late at night. Sometimes it rings once and stops. Sometimes a message follows: a job offer, a friendly "hello, do I know you?", or an investment tip. These calls are one of the most common ways WhatsApp scams begin.
What the callers want
- To confirm your number is active, so it can be sold or targeted again.
- To start a conversation that leads to a job, investment or romance scam. See job offer scams and wrong-number messages.
- To make you call back. See missed call tricks.
- To record or trick you on video. See video call blackmail.
What to do
- Do not answer or call back numbers you do not know.
- Turn on Silence unknown callers in Settings, Privacy, Calls. See how.
- Block and report the number. See blocking and reporting.
- Tighten your privacy so strangers see less. See privacy settings.
Country codes can mislead. Virtual numbers can show any country code, so do not assume where the caller is, or that a local-looking code is safe.

Frequently asked questions
Why am I getting WhatsApp calls from other countries?
Scammers buy or scrape phone numbers and use international or virtual numbers because they are cheap and hard to trace.
Is it dangerous to answer?
Answering itself is not usually harmful, but it confirms your number is active and opens a conversation designed to manipulate you.
Does the country code tell me where the caller is?
Not reliably. Virtual numbers can carry a country code without the caller being there.
