Missed Calls and Callback Charges
A single ring from an unknown number, then silence. Missed call scams try to get you to call back premium-rate numbers, or simply confirm your number is live. What to do.

Your phone rings once, from a number you do not know, and stops. Curiosity says call back. That is exactly what the caller wants, either to charge you for the call or to confirm your number is live and worth targeting.
How missed call scams work
- Premium-rate callbacks on your regular phone line: calling back connects you to a costly international or premium number, sometimes with hold music to keep you on.
- Number harvesting: any answer or callback shows the number is active, so it is sold or targeted again.
- Opening a conversation on WhatsApp: "Sorry, missed your call, who is this?" leads into a longer scam. See wrong-number messages.
What to do
- Do not call back numbers you do not recognise, especially international ones.
- If it might be important, search the number first. See checking if a number is a scam.
- Silence unknown callers on WhatsApp. See how.
- Block and report repeat callers.
A genuine caller who needs you will usually leave a message or send a text explaining who they are.

Frequently asked questions
What is a one-ring or 'wangiri' scam?
A call that rings once and hangs up, hoping you call back a premium-rate or international number that charges you per minute.
Do WhatsApp calls charge me if I call back?
WhatsApp calls use data rather than call charges. Premium-rate charges apply when you return the call through your normal phone line.
What if I already called back?
Check your phone bill and contact your mobile network if you see unexpected charges.
