Join a large WhatsApp group, such as a conference, a marketplace, a fan club or a big community, and every other member can see your phone number. Most are harmless. But large open groups attract people who join simply to collect numbers.

What exposure leads to

How to reduce the risk

  1. Limit your profile: set profile photo, About and last seen to My contacts. See privacy settings.
  2. Leave large groups you no longer need.
  3. Prefer channels or community announcements for one-way updates, which hide your number from other followers. See Communities and Channels.
  4. Silence unknown callers. See how.
  5. Consider a separate number for selling, business or public groups.

If you run a large group, consider whether a channel or community announcement group would serve members better and protect their numbers.
