Added to a random investment or job group? Change one WhatsApp privacy setting so only your contacts can add you, and learn what happens when someone else tries.

Scammers buy or scrape lists of phone numbers and add hundreds of people at once to groups promising investment tips, easy jobs or giveaways. The group fills with fake members celebrating profits, and the pressure to join in begins. The easiest fix is to stop strangers adding you in the first place.

Change the setting

  1. Go to Settings, then Privacy.
  2. Tap Groups.
  3. Choose My contacts, or My contacts except… to exclude specific people too.

After this, people who are not in your contacts cannot add you directly. They may send you an invite link in a private chat, which you can simply ignore.

Common group scams

Cheering members are often fake. Many "members" posting profit screenshots are run by the scammers. See fake profit screenshots.

If you are already in one

  1. Do not click links, reply or message the admin.
  2. Open the group info, tap Report group, then Exit group.
  3. Block any members who message you privately afterwards.
