Task scams are one of the most common WhatsApp scams today. They often begin with a job offer message and a simple task: like three videos, send screenshots, and receive a small payment. It works. The money is real. That is the hook.

How task scams escalate

  1. Free tasks with small, real payouts.
  2. A "mentor" moves you to a group or another app with other "workers" celebrating earnings. See Telegram hand-offs.
  3. Prepaid tasks: you deposit money to "buy" a task bundle and earn commission.
  4. The trap: a "combination task" puts your account into a negative balance. Deposit more to unlock your earnings.
  5. Fees to withdraw: taxes, account upgrades or penalties, until you stop paying.

Any job that asks you to pay in is not a job. Real employers pay you; they do not take deposits.

Signs you are in a task scam

  • Work is liking, rating, reviewing or "boosting" products, apps or hotels.
  • Payments in crypto, or deposits to personal accounts.
  • A balance shown on a website that you cannot withdraw.
  • Pressure from a "team leader" and group members.

What to do

  1. Stop depositing, however close the "withdrawal" seems.
  2. Save screenshots of chats, websites and payments. See preserving evidence.
  3. Contact your bank and report the scam. See reporting WhatsApp scams.
  4. Ignore anyone offering to recover your money for a fee. See recovery scams.

Frequently asked questions

They actually paid me at first. How is it a scam?

Small early payouts build trust. The scam comes when you must deposit your own money to continue, and those deposits grow until you cannot withdraw anything.

Can I get my deposited money back?

Contact your bank or payment provider immediately and report it. Be wary of anyone offering to recover it for a fee.

Why do they move me to Telegram?

To use private groups with fake members cheering each other on, and to avoid WhatsApp bans.
