Disappearing Messages and View Once: What They Do and Don't Protect
Disappearing messages and view once reduce what stays on phones, but they cannot stop someone photographing the screen. What each feature protects and when not to rely on it.

WhatsApp offers two features that limit how long things stay in a chat. They are useful for everyday privacy, but they are sometimes mistaken for a guarantee that nobody can keep what you send. They are not.
Disappearing messages
When turned on in a chat, new messages vanish after the time you choose: 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. You can also set it as the default for new chats.
- Helps with: old conversations piling up on a phone that could later be lost, stolen or looked through.
- Does not stop: the other person keeping, forwarding or photographing a message before it goes.
View once
Photos, videos and voice messages sent as view once disappear after the recipient opens them.
- Helps with: casual forwarding and saving within WhatsApp. Screenshots are blocked on supported devices.
- Does not stop: someone photographing the screen with another phone or camera.
Never send intimate images believing view once keeps them safe. Sextortion scammers can still capture them. If this has happened, see video call blackmail and what to do about sextortion.
Good uses
- A one-time door code or address you do not want lingering.
- Keeping everyday chats tidy on a phone other people sometimes use.
Things to avoid sending, even with these features
- Identity documents unless you are sure of the recipient. See protecting ID documents on WhatsApp.
- Passwords, PINs, verification codes and bank details.
More on what others can capture: recording, screenshots and what others can keep. For more, see our complete guide to WhatsApp scams.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone save a view once photo?
They cannot forward or save it inside WhatsApp, and screenshots are blocked on supported devices, but they can still photograph the screen with another camera.
Do disappearing messages delete everything?
New messages disappear after the chosen time, but someone can still keep a message, forward it before it disappears, or capture it.
Should I send sensitive documents with view once?
Better not to send them at all unless necessary. View once limits copies but cannot guarantee they are not captured.
