Two phones side by side during a payment

Money now moves easily between mobile wallets, payment apps and bank accounts. Transfers are usually instant, and once received and withdrawn, they are hard to reverse. A short pause before sending prevents most mistakes and many scams.

Before you press send

  1. Check the recipient name shown on the confirmation screen. Does it match who you are paying?
  2. Check the number or account digit by digit, especially if you typed or copied it.
  3. Check the amount, including zeros.
  4. Add a reference so the payment is easy to trace later.
  5. Ask why if the name is different from the person or business. "It's my cousin's account" is a common scam line.

A name mismatch is a stop sign. Businesses and people you know should receive money in their own name or their business's registered name.

Wallet to bank and back

  • Use the official "transfer to bank" or "transfer to wallet" option in your app or menu.
  • Check any fees before confirming.
  • Keep the transaction ID until the money has arrived.

If it went to the wrong place

Call your provider on its official number at once with the transaction ID. See stopping a transfer quickly.
