Once crypto leaves your wallet, there is no bank to call and no chargeback. That is why scammers love it. Recovery is sometimes possible, but only through proper reporting, and the most common outcome after a theft is being targeted by a second scam.

What is realistic

  • If stolen funds reach a regulated exchange, reports from victims and police can sometimes lead to freezes.
  • Law enforcement occasionally recovers and returns funds after investigations.
  • Most individual cases do not result in recovery.

What to do first

  1. Move any remaining funds to a new, secure wallet if your wallet or seed phrase is compromised. See seed phrase theft.
  2. Record wallet addresses, transaction IDs, dates and amounts.
  3. Report to the exchange you sent from and any exchange the funds went to.
  4. Report to police and national reporting services, such as ic3.gov in the US. See reporting financial fraud.

"Recovery experts" are the second wave. People who find you online, claim hacking skills or special access, and ask for an upfront fee are almost always scammers. See fake recovery agents.
