Loan App Harassment and Contact Shaming: What to Do
Some loan apps message your contacts, post shaming images or threaten you over late payments. What to do: keep evidence, report to regulators and app stores, and protect your contacts.

Some predatory loan apps turn to intimidation when payments are late, or even before they are due. They message your family, colleagues and friends, send edited images, or threaten police action. It is frightening, and it is often against the rules.
What to do
- Keep evidence: screenshots of messages, calls, numbers and anything sent to your contacts. See evidence to keep.
- Revoke permissions: remove the app's access to contacts, photos and SMS in phone settings. See loan app permissions.
- Warn your contacts briefly that they may receive messages and should ignore them.
- Report to your financial regulator, consumer protection authority and the app store. See reporting unlicensed lenders.
- Report threats to the police.
If the loan is genuine
- Ask for a written statement of what you owe.
- Agree a repayment plan in writing.
- Pay only through official channels, never to a collector's personal number. See debt collection scams.
You are not alone, and it is not your fault. Contact shaming is designed to make you pay out of embarrassment. Talking to someone you trust helps.

How do I stop the app accessing my contacts?
Revoke its permissions in your phone settings, and uninstall it after saving evidence.
