A WhatsApp call from a profile showing a police badge or a government logo. The caller says your ID was used in a crime, you owe unpaid tax, your visa is invalid or a parcel in your name contained illegal goods. To avoid arrest, you must pay now or move your money to a "safe account".

Warning signs

  • An official matter handled through a WhatsApp call.
  • Threats of immediate arrest, deportation or account freezing.
  • Instructions to stay on the call, keep it secret or not tell your bank.
  • Payment by transfer, gift cards, crypto or to a "safe account".
  • Requests to install an app or share your screen. See screen sharing scams.

No real agency asks you to move money to keep it safe, or to pay fines in gift cards or crypto.

What to do

  1. End the call.
  2. Contact the agency using the number on its official website.
  3. If you paid or shared bank details, call your bank at once.
  4. Report the number. See reporting WhatsApp scams.

Frequently asked questions

Would the police or tax office contact me on WhatsApp?

It is very unusual for official matters like fines, warrants or tax debts. They normally use letters, official portals or calls you can verify.

They showed an ID badge on video. Is that proof?

No. Badges, uniforms, logos and documents are easy to fake.

How do I check?

End the call and contact the agency using the number on its official website.
