Romance scammers are skilled at seeming genuine, but their behaviour follows recognisable patterns. No single sign proves a scam, and genuine people sometimes do one or two of these things. But several together, especially alongside any request for money, should make you stop and check.

Red flags in how they behave

  1. They move very fast. Declarations of love, talk of marriage or "destiny" within days or weeks.
  2. They want to leave the app. "Let us talk on WhatsApp or Telegram", often before you know them.
  3. They avoid video calls. The camera is broken, the connection is bad, they are on a military base, or calls are always short and dark.
  4. They cannot meet. Plans to visit are made and then cancelled because of a crisis.
  5. They are secretive or ask you to be. "Do not tell your family about us yet; they would not understand."
  6. Their story does not add up. Details change, time zones do not match, spelling and style vary as if different people are writing.

Red flags in their profile

  1. Photos look professional or like a model, and appear elsewhere online under other names.
  2. The profile is new, with few friends, posts or tagged photos.
  3. A classic persona: soldier, doctor with an aid agency, oil rig engineer, widowed businessman. See common romance scam personas.

Red flags around money

  1. A crisis that needs money: medical bills, customs fees, a frozen account, travel costs, legal trouble.
  2. An investment opportunity they want to share with you. See romance investment scams.
  3. Unusual payment methods: gift cards, crypto, transfers to a third party, or asking you to receive money for them.

Any request for money from someone you have not met in person is the strongest sign of all.

Tests you can run

  • Reverse image search their photos. See how to do it.
  • Ask for a live video call and ask them to do something specific, such as wave or say your name.
  • Search their name and story with words like "scam".
  • Ask detailed questions about the place they say they live or work.
  • Tell a friend and show them the conversation. An outside view helps.

Illustrative example

Illustrative example · Messages in the third week
I have never felt this way about anyone. I know it is fast, but I believe God brought you to me. When my contract ends next month, I want to come and meet you. For now my camera is broken, the base only allows short calls. Please do not tell your children yet, let it be our secret for now. ❤️
Red flags:
  • Very fast declarations of love.
  • An excuse to avoid video calls.
  • A request for secrecy from family.

If the signs are there

Do not send money or share financial details. Save the conversation, report the profile to the platform, and talk to someone you trust. If money has already been sent, act quickly with our first-hour checklist. Our romance scams explained guide covers the whole pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest sign of a romance scammer?

A request for money, gifts, crypto or financial help from someone you have never met in person. Everything else is a warning; that is the proof.

They video called me once. Does that mean they are real?

It helps, but short, blurry or pre-recorded calls, calls where the camera 'breaks', and deepfake video are all used. Look at the whole pattern, especially any money request.

Can a romance scammer be someone from my own country?

Yes. Scammers may claim to be local, or genuinely be local. Location does not prove anything either way.
