Fake Online Shops Run Through WhatsApp

A professional catalogue, glowing reviews and bargain prices, but the goods never arrive. How fake shops use WhatsApp Business and social ads, and how to check before paying.

A pile of cardboard boxes sealed with blue tape

A social media ad shows designer trainers or the latest phone at half price. "Order on WhatsApp." The chat has a smart catalogue, customer photos and an eager assistant. You pay by transfer, and the delivery never comes.

How fake WhatsApp shops operate

  • Ads on social media that send you straight to a WhatsApp chat. See scam ads.
  • A business profile with a copied logo and catalogue. See fake business accounts.
  • Fake proof: customer screenshots, delivery photos and reviews created by the scammers.
  • Payment first, by bank transfer, mobile money or crypto, never cash on delivery.
  • Extra fees after payment: customs, insurance or "delivery upgrade".

Checks before you pay

  1. Search the shop name plus "scam" or "reviews" on independent sites.
  2. Reverse image search product photos. See reverse image search.
  3. Ask for a physical address and check it exists.
  4. Offer to pay on delivery or collection. A fake shop will refuse or invent reasons.
  5. Check the price: much cheaper than everywhere else is a warning in itself.

Payment to a personal account for a "company" is a major red flag.

Frequently asked questions

The shop has lots of positive reviews. Is it safe?

Reviews shared in the chat or on a page the seller controls can be fake. Look for independent reviews on sites the seller does not control.

Why do fake shops insist on payment first?

Because once you transfer money or pay by mobile money, it is very hard to reverse.

I paid and the seller blocked me. What now?

Contact your bank or payment provider immediately, keep screenshots, and report the number and any ads to the platform.
