Fake Bank and Payment Company Accounts on WhatsApp
Scammers set up WhatsApp accounts with bank logos to 'help' you, 'verify' your account or 'reverse' a transaction. How to spot fake bank accounts and check safely.

A WhatsApp account with your bank's logo messages you about a "suspicious transaction", or replies after you complained about your bank online. It offers to help, then asks you to confirm your details, share a code or move money to a "safe account".
Common scripts
- "We blocked a payment. Confirm your card number and the code we just sent."
- "Your account will be suspended unless you update your details."
- "You were charged by mistake. We will reverse it; please approve the request."
- "Move your money to this safe account while we investigate." See fake fraud department calls.
- Mobile money: "Our agent sent money to you by mistake, please send it back." See mobile money scams.
How to spot a fake
- They contacted you first, or found you after a public complaint.
- The number does not match the one on your bank's official website or app.
- They ask for a PIN, password, card security code or one-time code.
- They pressure you to act quickly or keep it secret.
A logo and a business name prove nothing. Anyone can create a business profile with a copied logo. Check the number yourself. See fake business accounts and badges.
How to check safely
- Stop replying.
- Call your bank on the number on your card or its official website.
- Report and block the WhatsApp account. See blocking and reporting.
If you shared details or sent money, see what to tell your bank. For more, see common WhatsApp scams.
Frequently asked questions
Do banks use WhatsApp?
Some do, for customer service. Check your bank's official website or app for its WhatsApp number, and never trust a number that contacted you first.
What will a genuine bank never ask on WhatsApp?
Your PIN, password, full card number, card security code or one-time codes.
Is a green or blue badge enough proof?
It helps, but names and logos can be copied. Check the number against the one on your bank's official website.
